faithful-steward:

The terrible killings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut are another frightening example of why our work is so important.

Coleman McCarthy (American journalist, lecturer, and head of the Center for Teaching Peace, in Washington, DC) said, “The people who are going to be in prison for murder are in our school classrooms now, and so are the people who are going to be in the White House.  If we don’t teach them peace, someone else will teach them violence.”

We do teach peace.  We do it in a lot of ways, and it makes a difference.  We need to keep doing it, learn to do it even better, and reach as many people, young and old, as we can.

Thank you — each of you — for what you do.

As I think about our 3000 Miles for Peace campaign next spring, and what I want to say to the people I meet with along the way as I walk to Elizabethtown, I think that this message of learning peace rather than violence may be central.

Blessings,
Bob

Most Christian “believers” tend to echo the cultural prejudices and worldviews of the dominant group in their country, with only a minority revealing any real transformation of attitudes or consciousness. It has been true of slavery and racism, classism and consumerism and issues of immigration and health care for the poor. From a religion based on a man who was always healing poor people and foreigners, it defies any logical analysis! One would think that people who insist on being monotheistic would be the first in line to walk across the artificial boundaries created by nation states, class systems, cultures and even religions. But often they are the last! It makes one wonder if they believe what they say they believe. Religion has too often become the way to defend the self instead of the way to “let go of the self” as Jesus forthrightly taught (Luke 9:23).

PREACH THAT.

Whatever Works of the Day: When it comes to traffic violations, the city of Caracas is clearly at the end of its invisible rope.
The district of Sucre in the eastern part of the Venezuelan capital has unleashed a horde of mimes onto its streets in hopes that their silent judgement will persuade bad drivers to curb their recklessness.
A troupe of about 120 mummers will utilize such tactics as finger-wagging and face-making in their pursuit of safer roads.
“Many times, the mimes can achieve what traffic police cannot achieve using warning and sanctions in their efforts to maintain control,” said Alex Ojeda, president of cultural organization which trained the mimes. “Mimes, on the contrary, often achieve the same objective by employing artistic and peaceful actions.”

This is creative.

If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.
